Device Online / Offline Status

The admin dashboard shows whether each of your kiosks is reachable, so you can tell at a glance that a lobby is working without walking to it.

You will see it in two places:

  • On the Home page, listed under each location in the Subscription overview table — the location name, then its kiosks with their status.
  • On the Device Settings page, under each device name.

What the colours mean

StatusMeaning
Online (green)The device has contacted the server within the last few minutes.
Offline (red)The device has not been heard from for over six minutes. It may be switched off, or it may have lost its network.
No signal yet (grey)The device has never reported. Usually a kiosk still running an older app version, or one not yet set up.

Beside the status you will see how long ago the device was last heard from — "2 min ago", "1 h ago" — so you can tell a kiosk that dropped off moments ago from one that has been down since yesterday.

Grey is not a fault. A device that has never reported is shown as "No signal yet" rather than "Offline" on purpose: it may be working perfectly and simply running an app version that predates this feature. Once that tablet updates, it starts reporting and turns green.

Why the status is not instant

How long before a switched-off device shows as offline A kiosk contacts the server every two minutes. The dashboard shows a device as offline once its last contact is more than six minutes old, so a device switched off is shown as offline between four and six minutes later, depending on where in its cycle it stopped. beatbeatbeat every 2 minutes device switched off shown as Offline 4 to 6 minutes later A single missed beat is tolerated on purpose, so a brief network blip does not flash the indicator red and back.

A kiosk contacts the server about every 2 minutes, and a device is only called offline once its last contact is more than 6 minutes old. So a device you switch off appears offline 4 to 6 minutes later, depending on where in its cycle it stopped.

That delay is deliberate. Calling a device offline after one missed contact would make the indicator flicker red and green over an ordinary wifi hiccup, which quickly teaches people to ignore it.

Refreshing

Both pages read the status when you open them, and again when you switch back to the browser tab. They do not poll continuously — a dashboard left open all day would otherwise ask the server for a reading nobody is looking at.

Use Refresh device status when you want to check right now. The time of the reading is shown beside the button, so you can always tell how current the answer is.

One thing the button cannot do is make a device report sooner than its next contact. A kiosk that has just come back online may still show as offline for a minute or two.

Good to know

Nothing is emailed or escalated. This is information on a screen, not an alerting system. Nobody is notified when a device goes offline.

A device with no location assigned still appears. On the Home page it is listed separately, under "Devices not assigned to a listed location", so a kiosk can never be missing from the page simply because it has no location.

This matters most for Roll Call and evacuation. A device that has been offline signed people in on the device, and those visits reach the server only when it reconnects — so during an outage a roll-call list from the dashboard can be incomplete. See How Syncing and Offline Mode Work.
